Thrilled to learn that a movie about Hypatia, “Agora”, with Rachel Weisz as Hypatia, will be released December 18th. Below are two of my vintage editions of Charles Kingsley’s 1853 fictionalized novel Hypatia, or New foes with an Old Face.

Two Victorian Era Editions of Hypatia, or New Foes with an Old Face
I love an epic period film, and the subject of Hypatia is close to my heart. Having a life-long appreciation of Egyptian history, I was horrified when at an early age (11 or so) I read how Hypatia was brutally murdered by an angry mob incited by “Saint” Cyril of Alexandria. It was that act that is the reason behind why I shun organized religion.

So I am so very envious of your image resources… I am a young graphic designer who appreciates historic illustration. May I ask where you got your imagery from and if you share or sell your beautiful resource files?
I assume you have my email from the form.
Hmmm, contrary to the myths (and contrary to the story presented in this movie it would seem) Hypatia’s murder had nothing to do with “organised religion”. She was simply caught up in a violent power struggle of the kind common in Alexandrian city politics. Her murder was in revenge for the murder by torture of the member of a rival faction. Edward Gibbon began the myth that Hypatia was killed because of her learning, which threatened Christianity, but there is no evidential basis for this story. Details
