2012 Philadelphia Flower Show Dreaming
By this time of year I’m anxious for the start of the Philadelphia International Flower Show, a Philadelphia tradition since 1829.
The week-long Philadelphia Flower Show runs begins Sunday, March 4, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, 12th & Arch Streets, Philadelphia, PA, 19107. You can find all the details on flower show tickets, coupons, discounts and vendors on the official website.
The theme for this year’s flower show is Hawaii: Islands of Aloha. Can you imagine a better way to banish Winter’s dull palette than a tropical paradise featuring beautiful orchids?
I’m sure the vendors will have an abundance of potted orchids for sale (although I’m more an heirloom tomato girl, if you know what I mean).
Even more than the orchid plants, I’m looking forward to the lectures. “Eat Your Lawn: How to Turn Your Yard into an Edible Landscape” (Sunday, March 4, 11:00 AM) is tops on my agenda. I dislike lawns with a passion and now is certainly the time of year to start planning.

I’m fortunate to live a short distance away from the Pennsylvania Convention Center, although even so, for many tourists the expense of traveling to Philly is much more reasonable than traveling to Hawaii!
I’m looking forward to the flower show this year, the last time I went was in 2007, when I photographed this beautiful orchid. How can this be?!
And if you can pull yourself away from the flowers long enough, be sure to visit Chinatown, a few steps away from the Convention Center and perhaps just as colorful (although not as fragrant) as the flower show. The streets were still decorated with beautiful red lanterns from the recent Chinese New Years festivities when I lunched at Wong Wong (941 Race St, best Peking Duck in town IMO) earlier this week, not sure if they’ll still be up during the flower show.
